As implied in the Introduction, time is an island in eternity. In time everything progressively degenerates and runs down to disorder and death. That is the universal law of entropy, also known as the second law of thermodynamics. This law of inevitable death is the supreme frustration for every living person in whom there is a longing for eternal significance. Such longing is implanted by God in our human nature (Ecclesiastes 3:11). It is His call to His creatures to come and join Him where He lives, to share His perspective, and thereby cease from their longing and rest with Him.
Since the Bible consists of revelations by God, which are revelations from eternity into time, the Bible is a history of appointments in time where the invisible eternal touches the visible temporal. Because men, who are limited by temporal vision, are predisposed to doubt the reality of the eternal, the purpose of this series is to examine these oft perplexing intersections of time and eternity in the Bible. The Bible tells the simple story of eternal God revealing Himself to time-shackled people. No source other than the Bible tells this story. If it is true, this story is the most important ever told, for it promises temporal fulfillment unto eternal satisfaction. This story promises answers to our most troublesome questions, “How? and Why?” These recurring questions have not been satisfactorily answered in time. They are personal questions that require an eternal Personal perspective.
My purpose here is not to focus on the temporal, which all of us know and experience. My purpose, which I confess is enigmatic, is to focus on the unseen eternal reality. Though the eternal real estate is not seen with eyes of flesh, it is the divine present tense context that encompasses all that we have seen, do see, or will see here in this temporal world. Because the promise of the eternal reality and eternal life is potentially so valuable, it would be a tragic presumption not to look into it as best we can. That is the path I propose to take in the following posts. I will pursue the path by examining historical vignettes in the Bible where I believe eternity intersects time. I welcome comments that shed light on the path.
