A Brief Bible Portrait of Jehovah, the Only True God
The Holy Bible is a book about Jehovah, the only true God. The only true God, because people can agree that His attributes are the very definition of any god worth his salt. Over time men have created many gods in the human image and built religions around them. These religions adore gods with sundry attributes of men in one form or another, but none have all the attributes of Jehovah. And it is readily acknowledged that the big three attributes of Jehovah are not, and cannot be, shared by any lesser god. These big three are: Omnipotence – Omniscience – Omnipresence. These big three attributes efficiently and cogently define Jehovah as the one and only Sovereign God.
The big three attributes are ascribed to God in the Holy Bible. No other religious text ascribes the big three to its lesser god(s). Some other religions and cults start with the Holy Bible, but alter or depart from it, rendering their lesser gods as human caricatures. These may partially pay homage to the big three, but depart from them in practice. Because of this we see a wide variety of religious practices, sects, denominations and cults. It is this fact that accounts for much religious confusion.
The Holy Bible is a single coherent and internally consistent volume of 66 books inspired by God through 44 human writers over thousands of years. It cannot be divided or edited according to human taste or preference. It stands whole and complete after millennia of careful inspection. And it tells us all we need to know about Jehovah, His sovereign attributes, and how He chooses to relate to us.
The big three are not the only attributes of God, but they are definitional and foundational, because they can readily be acknowledged by everyone as essential to the nature of One Who Is truly God. And if there is one who is such in constitution and nature, then there can be no other. Simply put, there cannot be competing gods, because, by definition, there can only be one Supreme Sovereign Being, before which no other can be equal or greater.
There can only be One God accurately described with the big three attributes:
1. All Powerful – In control of everything – Unopposable.
2. All Knowing – Knows every detail about everything, everyone and every time –
Cannot be surprised.
3. All Present – Present everywhere – Present everywhen.
Omnipotence requires omniscience and omnipresence – any gap in knowledge or presence in time impairs or negates omnipotence.
The above reasoning eliminates foolish questions about omnipotence like, “Can God make a rock so big that He cannot lift it?” God’s omnipotence, like His omniscience and omnipresence, simply Is, and is not contestable or opposable. As He told Moses, “I Am” (Exodus 3:13-14). God just Is, and He Is Unchanging. Likewise, His attributes just Are, and thus cannot be possessed by any lesser gods of human imagination. Though religious men, even those who profess the God of the Holy Bible, may assign human caricatures of Jehovah’s attributes to their gods or their interpretation of Jehovah, Jehovah’s attributes just Are, and do not change according to human interpretation. This is what makes Jehovah the only true God.
To discover the only true God is the greatest adventure of humankind. He reveals Himself in the whole counsel of His word, the Holy Bible, as people apply its wisdom to their experience in this world. The biggest challenge is to trust His word solely and completely in the face of competing religious or secular dogmas that try to alter or deny His word according to human notions. But the humbly earnest and sincere student of His word, will by the aid of God’s Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:1-16), discover blessed relationship with Jehovah—the only true God.
The big three attributes of Jehovah endow Him with inhuman character. What ordinary man would you want to have such attributes? The obvious answer is no man could manage such attributes. A sinful man with such attributes would be a tyrannical monster of our worst nightmares. If you doubt this, just look at the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian “gods” who are caricatures of human power and passion overextended. With no more than this description of the Jehovah’s big three attributes the Bible leaves us in awe beyond fear! Such austere Power is not One to Whom we can, or want, to relate. He is One we seek to avoid at all costs. And that is how we come into this world—fearing and hiding from God, because of the sin we inherit and practice.
But in the Bible, Jehovah reveals much more about Himself. Jehovah Is, not merely has, but Is Love (1 John 4:10, 16). His very nature Is love. He Is Love in the most altruistic sense, becoming one of us and laying down His divine life for His people. Jehovah is a perfect Father and Husband. Jehovah is like a mother hen sheltering her chicks. He carries His people on eagle’s wings. He hedges about His people and protects them. He supplies all His people’s needs and wants. Why? Because He loves us and is committed to blessing us. That is His nature. Love binds His attributes together and motivates all of His actions toward us. No other religious text or tradition describes its lesser god this way. Jehovah is unique, and therefore He Is the Only True God.
If the above brief description appeals to you, you can find out more in Jehovah’s Holy Word, the Bible. Seek Him there, and His gracious Holy Spirit will reveal Himself to you. Out of His omniscience He will give you knowledge unto your ultimate blessing. If you are sad, depressed, frightened, or afraid, His omnipotence will protect and deliver you, even from the pangs of death. In His gracious omnipresence you will never be alone. He is there for you now. Why not begin by opening the Bible and reading. I suggest beginning with the gospel of the apostle John in the New Testament. I recommend the New American Standard translation. Just talk and tell Jehovah, the Only True God, that you want to know Him, and your relationship will begin. Persevere and your relationship will thrive in eternal life.
Blessings in Jesus’ Name.
