In former posts I have mentioned death in regard to its connection between time and eternity for the individual who dies (see posts #8, #13, and #14 under the heading “Time and Eternity”). In this brief series I take a more intuitive approach to understanding what death is from everyone’s common perspective and experience.
Here I provide a unified definition of what death is. It is obvious that death is the end of life in the sense of being the termination, or terminus, of life, like the last stop on a railroad where the tracks cease. But we all know that the “end” can mean something very different than a simple termination. The “end,” in many contexts is a goal toward which people strive in their lives.
Therefore I wish to explore in this brief series death as the “end”--the “terminus” and the “goal” of life. Though on the surface these two definitions seem contradictory, I will show that they really can be quite compatible.
